The Hole played host this year to the BMFA Nationals, having last held the event in 2006.Early weather forecast were absolutely dire for the weekend event, which no doubt put some participants off, resulting in a smaller than expected turnout. Forecast improved as the weekend approached and with it the prospects of a good first day. With a 20mph westerly now being possible, Levisham was the natural choice. After the usual breathless climb up the hill, the flyers were greeted with almost total calm. If there was any wind it was from the NW. Not the first time winds speeds have been less than forecast. Ah well settle in for lunch, view the scenery, and get ready for an early finish!

As 12:30 approached, the wind freshened, some sport flying took place, and hey presto, consistent legal wind speed from the west ( ish ) appeared! As the course had been set up in anticipation, flying began almost immediately. |

Conditions were difficult, the wind not square on, but fairly consistent. Things improved as the rounds progressed, but by R8 it was clear that a late finish was not going to be achieved. The last 3 contestants struggling against a wind which was now almost blowing along the face of the hill. The 30 min timer started on more than one occasion, but one by one the remaining few were able to fly and complete the round. Thank heavens for that!

Peter Gunning, Richard Bago and Mike Evans were the early leaders on the first day, with Keith Wood, Graham Reed and Mike Shellim hot on their heels. Mark Redsell was not having a good day, lying in seventh place with John Phillips and Tom McPherson not far behind

Sunday dawned bright and dry, but with little wind from any direction, an early finish was expected. A pessimistic group headed off along the NW ridge ( the forecast direction ), but after lugging the models some miles, it was clear that we weren’t going to get any more wind! Head for the South Bowl, nice view, some thermals if the sun stays out, and more importantly, it is nearer the car park!

15 rounds later, who would have thought we would be holding a comp at all that day. Wind peaked at about 9m/s from the South, but began to go SW by the 4:30 deadline set at the beginning of the day |

Conditions couldn’t have been more different than those we endured on Saturday, but they didn’t suit everybody. Some early winners from they day before began to slip down the ranking. Richard Bago swapping places with Mark Redsell, whilst Graham Reed moved up with Mark Freeman, pushing Keith Wood down a couple of places. Tom McPherson dropped a couple of positions, whilst Mike Shellim was nearly pushed off ninth place by a charging Paul Middleton who was having a great day. |

Dave Wright just didn’t get on form, whilst Ronnie Lampe needed a few more of those ‘weyhey’ moments to move up the field. Tony Fu and Paul Foster boldly soldiered on, whilst Ben and Ian not doing as well as they are capable of. Dave Watson stuck in for a fairly solid mid position John Phillips and Mark Abbots dropped out of the rankings after quitting the competition early, and poor old Mick Walsh was ( very ) put out after a mid air with John Phillips prior to the start. However, the final results gave a very consistent Peter Gunning the top spot, and be crowned the BMFA F3F National Champion for 2008. Mark Redsell came good after a torrid Saturday to claim second place, and Mike Evans flew a steady weekend to come third. Fastest time was Mark Redsells 39.44 in R14 with his Sting.
