report by Jon Edison
It usually start these reports with a snipe at the weather forecast. But this time it was more or less spot on. Light easterly winds with rain early afternoon. Mind you, earlier in the week, Sunday was going to be a complete washout, so to get a comp in at all was a bonus.
An early start was planned by the ‘team’, but low cloud and initially no wind made that difficult. However, trusting the forecast (?) we set up camp on the East slope and duly waited for the wind to arrive. Arrive it did. Very light at first but building to, well not very much actually, but above the legal limit of 3m/s and gusting if that’s the word to 7m/s.
Flying was tricky in the variable conditions, and an eagerness on the part of many pilots to fly a short a course as possible, resulted in Base B seeing its fair share of cuts. If you were lucking to gain height on the climb out, diving into the course gave some speed, but then only to watch as the speed bled off at each turn. Finishing, after what felt like an age, was for some a relief!
Still, 5 rounds were completed, with the 6 th to be stopped by the rain only minutes away from completion was a frustration. Despite our best efforts, the rain beat us, the 30min delay rule duly applied, althought it was pretty clear we would not restart.
Club Members, Richard Bago, Dave Wright and Tony Fu had a bad day with the conditions, finishing well off their best. Ronnie Lampe was still getting to know his Acacia2, so some what of a baptism of fire for him. Keith Wood was our highest placed member with a terrific third place, closely followed by Jon Edison in fourth and Mark Redsell in fifth. Well done guys. Stings rule OK?
Results were a win for Kev Newton, second to Nigel Potter and an excellent third as stated for Keith.
Fastest time went to Andy Ellison with a 43.13.
